Tilman
Fabini is an architect, researcher and educator based in Austria. Motivated by
a desire to understand how architecture can act within a world of
transformation, he focusses on dynamic spatial knowledge systems that catalyze
novel ways to interact with the environment.



 Tilman
received his Master in Architecture with Distinction from the University of
Applied Arts Vienna and previously studied at the University of Innsbruck and
the Southern California Institute of Architecture. His work has been featured
in international publications, conferences and exhibitions including the Venice
Biennale. Alongside his personal design practice, he collaborated with
architecture offices and is experienced in digital fabrication and exhibition
design. 



 Currently Tilman develops his Doctoral Thesis at the Institute of Architecture
and Media at Graz University of Technology, where he also teaches Information Visualization
and Digital Representation Techniques.

Advisor: Sam JacobThe proposal understands climate-sensitive architecture as a dynamic landscape responsive to seasons. It purposefully exposes infrastructure as accessible part of the city, reclaiming its domain for the public. By partly uncovering the Wienfluss, a natural corridor of cold air flow, it iniates a wind- and watercycle that actively changes the climate on site. 
The project transforms a largely sealed, mostly idle area with severe overheating issues and its attached hotel structure into a new riverfront, public plaza and housing complex that at the same time densifies and reinvigorates a central area of Vienna. 
The at times destructive flooding hazard of the river is seen as an opportunity to initiate a water cycle of flood retention, runoff collection and cooling that not only mitigates existing hazards but improves local conditions. As the functions change with the conditions on site, responding to enviromental realities is imagined as a dynamic process in which natural and human-built systems overlap, ultimately resulting in hybrid, more resilient forms of public nature.


Through reinterpretation of historic material and the usage of cutting-edge scanning, mapping and simulation techniques, it proposes a hybrid of infrastructure, architecture and landscape for the Wiener Heumarkt.



Most importantly, the project does so by offering and exploring new forms of representation that merge the physical environment with atmospheric and geological data, offering novel ways to read and evaluate urban spaces.
At the same time, this acts as aesthetic driver, ultimately resulting in visual representations that translate the abstract phenomena of climate change into the visible world of architectural planning.

Vienna is a city that has historically been wrested from nature. Built on the former swamps and wetlands of the meandering Danube, the water networks have been largely tamed, embanked and covered. In addition, buildings have altered the surface topology, resulting in a change of air flows. 



The measures that have enabled the city to grow and prosper in the past now become recontested: Rising temperatures are not only caused by climate change, but tremendously intensified by the configuration of the urban fabric.



This project focusses on the rediscovery of natural flows to mitigate these effects, not to restore past configurations but to rather propose new, hybridized forms at the convergence of architecture, infrastructure and landscape.&#38;nbsp;

	The most notable impact on the environemnt are rising temperatures: In 2050, most of Vienna’s inner districts will already experience more than 100 annual days with temperatures above 25°. A huge difference can be examined between dense urban areas and sparser ones, especially in proximity to open water. 



To maintain the rate of liveability in especially public spaces, measures are indispensable. Extensive surface sealing, a decreasing proportion of greenery, enclosed rivers and extenuated wind patterns are factors of its decrease in quality and biodiversity, a process that can be counteracted by reinstating vegetation, open water surfaces and cold air flow, resulting in green corridors, natural ventilation and heat dispersion.

	Protection against rain, heat and wind is crucial. The availability of technological means that solve these challenges tend to distract from solutions that design with climate in a more harmonic and symbiotic way.



This proposal utilizes climate to localize architecture, making it more site specific and bringing back its regional relevancy. On an urban scale, the correlations and overlaps of natural and human-built systems are examined to exploit specific local aspects within the built environment.



Correlations exist between cold air corridors, waterways, the configuration of the urban fabric and urban heat islands, all converging at the project site of the Wiener Heumarkt. Here, social, infrastructural and natural programs merge into  a large area affected by overheating, poor building substance and biological regression.

in order to reestablish the connection to urban matters, the site is analyzed as fluid condition, permeable to dynamics and processes.
Through reconstruction of geologic layers, the area reveals its hydrologic heritage: It has been percolated by water for a long time, its ever-changing history memorized in soil. 
The Heumarkt Area represents a development that did not take in regard natural flows; it is a sealed area with inconsistent program, making it a valid idle space within the urban configuration to reprogram and intensify.

The city of Vienna plans to tear down the existing Hotel structure and replace it with a similar, even larger volume. With architecture treated as static element neglecting its dynamic environemnt, it is impossible to adjust to future challenges. This proposal therefore suggests a different strategy that also includes the proximity of the site: Traffic is circumverted, the bare skeleton preserved, and adjacent underground areas of parking garages rediscovered.The Hotel acts as a horizontal air barrier, a 100-meter-wide horizontal structure effectively blocking wind flows. This impedes heat dispersion, resulting in hot air accumulation on the court. Together with the large amount of sealed area and the here covered Wienfluss, it fails to meet demands and requires transformation.Wind simulations reveal the disruptive effect of the Hotel volume, towering surrounding buildings and being situated orthogonally to the prevailing wind direction.

through Laserscans, opacities and mapped hidden infrastructures, existing and proposed underground structures are revealed, and the rediscovery of the submerged Wienfluss as both accessible riverfront and flooding infrastructure is made visible.



The Hotel volume is topped by 2 floors and reduced on the right, reopening the wind corridor. The vast underground spaces become basins for flood retention, mitigating hazards on site. At the same time, they serve as storage, dispensing the water for cooling purposes over time.



A central distribution element acts as overflow infrastructure, esplanade, water-and traffic circulation, pavilion, operable dam and lookout.&#38;nbsp;

Notations of Climate

In order to establish a common ground of representation, the project was developed through a variety of drawing styles merging the traditional figurative appearance of the built environment and its immaterial characteristics of temperature, radiation or water flow by colorcoding, varying densities and new taxonomies of architetcural drawing.

This does not only offer novel ways to read and evaluate spaces, but also acts as aesthetic driver, resulting in visual representations that translate pheomena of climate into the tangible world of architectural drawing.
Resulting from different methods of computation, simulation and mapping, they allow for a shift in paradigms by for example manifesting shadows as design element in the notation.

Being exposed to water, the height acts as pulse activating different programme on site. During springfloods and after cloud bursts, the underground retention basins, surface water plaza and riverbed fill up, turning the public areas into infrastructural floodplains. The pond is a local runoff collector, mitigating the magnitude of surface water impact on the river height and allowing for infiltration. Vegetation on site acts as natural delay, slowing down rainwater recursion. As landscape capable of interaction with a fluid context, functions vary over time, allowing for harmony and synchronization with the environment. The large retention masses act later as asset for irrigation, surface water exposure and facade cooling.

	The lowered and cut Hotel is extended outwards by a longitudinal addition. It consists of commercial space on the lower floors, being accessible from street level, and housing units on top, allowing to densify yet reinvigorate through an intricate intertwinedness of programme. 



A large atrium works as windcatcher, a vernacular method to benefit from the air flow on site, able to harvest cold breeze at night to moderate temperatures. It is connected vertically through hatches and air filters with the retention basins, allowing additional exchange with the cold air underneath. At the same time, the chimney acts as central circulation- and transportation, providing water to irrigate and power the south-facing pipe facade. 


	

Adressing the footprint of architecture and the possibilities of vertical overlap, an effort is made to extend the surroundings through the buildings. The Extension is rested on columns, making it more permeable to the movements on site, offering functions of both movement and destination. 

Building volumes are part of the landscape, offering entry points for vertical circulation and core functions on ground level without occupying lateral space.

In conventional architectural representation, space is notated in figures and outlines, hard borders depicting distinct bodies. Completely leaving out environmental and biological information, it requires methods that embed and translate immaterial phenomena into their notation of reality.

Given the distribution and resolution of climatological aspects at threshholds rather than boundaries, series of drawings reflect on the possible establishment of a common ground in representation, depicting bodies, zones and agents at equal hierarchies.

Transcending the strict hierarchy of interior vs exterior representation, agency is extended beyond building perimeters, creating new embodiments and manifestations of space. By doing so, the project reflects on the disciplinary boundary with disciplinary tools.

	Ultimately, Common Grounds does not only reinvigorate a largely sealed site by solving its overheating problems and temporary use, but advocates for a city in which there is no clear distinction between architecture and surroundings, but rather extending the impact area beyond building perimeters.



The actors are in constant flux with the conditions, allowing for dynamic reciprocities between infrastructure, architecture and enviroment in opposition to a rather static and rigid urban model.



Providing the framework for human and non-human protagonists alike, the hybridity of architecture, infrastructure and landscape represents a new, resilient form of public nature.

Our cities are symbolic in their manifestation of today’s inequalities. Throughout the last century, policies have created urban fabric that is increasingly homogenous in form and function. Programmes and typologies have been deliberately separated and the public and natural realm in-between has been continuously more controlled in the name of transportation, safety and surveillance. These urban typologies are not only socially unsustainable, they are also unequipped to provide radical solutions to changing environmental concerns and the reality of an imminent climate crisis.
Borders of Plurality uses Machine Learning techniques to reimagine Vienna as network of green corridors, opposing the hazards of overheating and species extinction by an increase of biological agents.
By analyzing existing neighborhoods in Vienna, the project marks areas within the city that are unequipped to withstand changing environmental conditions and are socially unsustainable.



Through thorough classification, zones are determined in which a regeneration takes place. Instead of overriding existing contexts, the main goal is to utilize as much as possible from existing structures, dismantling buildings partly but keeping their skeletons.
Machine Learning networks trained on historic cartography and imagery provide first hints for the urban reconfiguration and regeneration. To reinhabit this framework, clues derived from environemtal data and mappings are translated into transformations to the cityscape.



Questioning the spatial politics of finite lots and perimeters, the proposal speculates on zoning derived from environemtal data and biologic necessity, calling for a paradigm shift in urban planning.

Oppressing the Natural

Human settlements have become increasingly controlled in order to fulfill economical needs, pushing natural agencies further out. Vienna is now facing a disequilibrium with severe societal and environmental drawbacks. 

Historically a city wrested from nature, old maps were reconstructed documenting the terraforming process of vast wetlands into today’s configuration. Extended by frame interpolations, a Dataset was created inheriting the properties of zoning.

The trained GAN was then linked to a Style Transfer network, enabling to reimagine the stylized maps as Satellite Imagery.

As an ecocentric approach, the aim is to create urban compositions meant for coexistance and synergy of a multitude of human and non-human agencies, redefining coexistence.

Zoning of past centuries has transformed cities into islands of singular function. A decentralized approach is needed, able to dissolve the strict borders of singularity.

A wider analysis of Vienna reveals the uneven distribution; greenery is domesticated in designated park areas leaving inbetween spaces particularly vulnerable to climate affections.









	Borders of Plurality is an exploration in the combinatory potential of artificial and biological intelligence in the context of augmented design processes. This methodology ultimately aims to create a more dynamic and densely-nit urban composition, which rejects the impermeable tendencies of human settlements to their natural world. 
The principle of ecocentrism is a fundamental shift from the highly controlled baroque gardens of Vienna into a much more interdependent relationship of human and non-human agencies. Urban fabrics of the future must be able to dynamically embrace the mutually beneficial coexistence of anthropocene, natural and artificial actors.

	Machine Learning is leveraged in the early project phase as an augmented sketching tool which allows for explorations within the space of infinite solutions along the patterns of Vienna’s urban fabric.



Through supervised learning techniques of feature recognition, the trained network can interpolate through characteristics such as spatial regularity, natural diversity or building density. By again using style transfer, these spatial organization principles were applied to the Imagery of Volkertviertel, testing out different methods and implications. 



Within this collaborative framework, various of machine learning networks are deployed. Initially, pix2pix architecture is leveraged to disentangle the semantic features of Vienna’s present urban typology.

The results of exploration are juxtaposed with actual conditions: As the process happens from within, building types and corresponding construction possibilities are very important, as well as already existing potentials and solar exposure.
To achieve an authentic balancing of the scales, it is crucial to question the design methodologies which are involved in dictating the development of urban form. All previous planning techniques were conceived solely through the eyes of humans, whose anthropocene preconceptions are therefore inherent in all its products. Through a hybridisation of human and machine intelligence, the act of creation can be extended beyond humanistic instincts into a more open-ended systematic.&#38;nbsp;

A key advantage of using synthetic intelligence in this context is its ability to reduce the high dimensionality of the complex reality of urban fabrics into a more tangible representation. This generalisation is then passed onto a series of generative networks, which are programmed to explore the depths of all design possibilities within the limitations of the original semantic characteristics. 
The potential of this approach is in its visual indeterminacy. The familiar yet strange contradictions present in the outcome create a sensation of defamiliarization, which allow for the viewing of established structures through a different lens. This shift can provide meaningful input in order to produce new and unexpected possibilities of urban compositions.

Utilizing Image-to-Image Machine Learning, those areas are ultimately dreamt into threedimensional structures responsive to their surroundings. The resolution of detail speaks to the grade of information, resulting in specific, contextualized aggregations.&#38;nbsp;
Following the Urban Cliff Hypothesis, the structures act as “reefs” for an advancing urban ecology: The heterogenous features of cliffs such as crevices, ledges, and overhangs, create a mosaic of microhabitats capable of sustaining diverse plant life and promoting ecological complexity. Over time, life sediments within the architetcure, turninf it into an urban ecosystem itself.&#38;nbsp;
Investigating novel material strategies, the proposal investigates LC3 (Limestone Calcinated Clay Cement) as low-emission building material that can be sourced locally.



The Modules can&#38;nbsp; be assembled in prefabricated units cast in modular formwork,&#38;nbsp; allowing for monomaterialistic crosssections in respective parts. In addition to the already defined ecologic zones, the crevasses emerging from the weathering of material allow for the inhabitation by natural species. Through the curved surface, the microclimate is lowered in the summer by better evapotranspiration.



This can be leveraged to create building-integrated habitats supporting biodiversity. Geologically and biologically inspired textures and forms can create heterogenous microtopographies and -climates fostering plant growth.&#38;nbsp;On a greater timescale, the clay and limestone further decay, exposing the reinforcements for further sedimentation. The buildings become ruins, acting as artificial reefs for natural agents.

Situated in Grand Valley, Colorado, the project deals with new adaptive agriculture typologies, fit for more sustainable crop production in the wake of an imminent climate crisis. Instead of a solely extractive practice, circular startegies are developed providing benefits for the environment, local production and natural agents. 



Turning commodities into assets, agricultural waste is recycled and formed into mycelium structures, acting as the backbone for a rewilding- and regeneration process. 



Creating a new fabric that is both technologically functional and environmentally reinvigorating, the project reflects on the possible overlap in natural and man-made systems, advocating for hybrid programme and decentralized coexistence. 



The intervention ultimately becomes a driver for an urbanity in which funghi, bacteria, humans and swarm machines of intelligence become “bio-citizens” contributing to a new  morphogenesis. The project resembles a new ecological sensibility and calls for a different understanding of the role of humanity which – supported by artificial and biological helpers – has to reconsider its relationship with nature in order to accomplish the challenges of the future restoring malpractices of the past.

	Arising Water Crisis



The project uses geographic data and climate predictions as mean to relate from a global dynamics to an architecture-scale use case. The inequalities in climatic impacts put specific regions especially at risk. The increase in temperatures and change in precipitation patterns render agricultural practices especially in the southwestern regions of the US as not longer viable.



The 100th Meridian, originally the natural transition between the dry west and wet east, shifts eastwards. The implications could erradicate entire economies if no action is taken.



The american Southwest is particularly prone to the affections of climate change. A more-than-average increase in annual temperatures and decrease in precipitation amounts makes the region more than ever dependant on its natural water resources- few major water arteries that are coupled to the viability of entire landscapes. The entire region is largely dependant on the three systems of Colorado, Sacramento and Rio Grande rivers.



Caused by infrastructural impacts such as Dams and Hydroelectric plants, especially the ecosystem of the Colorado river is already affected. At the same time, the artificial reservoirs of Lake Powell and Lake Mead  sustain entire regions making the water system extremely fragile. Human and natural systems are already unseparately interwoven making them highly interdependant.




	Salination



Only 2.5% of the earth’s water are fresh. Saline levels in  fresh water have strated rising globally. The primary cause of freshwater salinatization are agriculture, resource extraction, and land clearing. 



As a symptom of short-sighted practice, the Colorado river has already drastically increased in salinity. Most species are extremely sensitive to salt concentration causing a massive extinction of organic life.



The reason is the unsubstituted agriculture industry that counteracts losses due to the changing climate with aggressive fertilization and irrigation to maintain the yields. Water is already exported via pipelines to California and New Mexico.



Increased salination is not only caused by artificial chemical leaking of fertilizers. Most of the Colorado Basin consists of saline-high Mancos Shale sedimentary rock. Trough extensive irrigation, the bedrock is washed out of its minerals.



Salination threatens a fundamental resource- drinkable water. The long-term cost of salination, its effects on the environment and its degradation of arable land are immense.

	Strategy
The Colorado RIver is facing two interconnected issues: Water Shortage and Salination, which are both due to rigid farming practices neglecting a changing climate. 
Currently, a large Salination plant at the mexican border processes the river’s water, causing irreparable damage to the affected regions upstream. 



As an overregional concept for regeneration, this project proposes decentralized deployments of interventions, working with local economies and environments. By using water in more effective ways, exisitng production levels can be maintained.In order to tackle the issues and link open ends, a circular system of Vertical Farming, Desalination and ecologic Healing is proposed as an Agriculture 2.0.



The energydemanding process of Desalination is made possible with the huge hydroelectric potential, and  the byproduct of demineralized sludge is reused as fertilizer. The organic waste is used as fish feed and as organic matter and mycelium growth substrate,  resulting in the reinvigoration of landscape and biodiversity through new sanctuaries.



The system is similar to existing 2-loop Hydroponics, but takes unique advantage of the salinated River turning commodities into assets.

	Grand ValleyAs case study of the Masterplan serves the Grand Valley in Colorado. Located at the junction of Colorado and Gunnison river, close to the Utah border, the valley only resubmits 2% of total agriculutral backwash into the river, but is responsible for 17% of the saline pollution.



The entire Valley is degrading, both environmental and social. Ongoing desertification and unemployment increase the economic pressure and increase the release of toxins in order to keep up with demands.
Aside a spacetaking settlement policy of Cul-de-sac and large sealed parking lots, the ongoing degradation can be seen everywhere in the valley. Most fields contain their own reservoirs for irrigation and the monocultures are decreasing the biodiversity and plant resilience.



In addition, the constant irrigation causes the degradation of the topsoil making it vulnerable to erosion. The organic extinction is already affecting microclimates, leaving hardly any regular plants due to salinated streams.

On its way through Grand Valley, extensive irrigation combined with fertilizer causes almost a fifth of the Rivers’ salinity, causing ecologic problems further downstream.



As the agricultural sector is demographically the most important, this is counteracted by monocultures, more aggressive pesticides and heavy freshwater extraction.



What offers short-term relief drastically severes enviromental conditions on the long term. This project proposes a plan of recovery, utilizing the symptoms of salination as initiator for energy extraction by reverse osmosis. At the same time, it underlines the importance of long-term planning.An artificial irrigation channel diverts water at the hydroelectric dam situated at the entrance of the valley. The water travels north to south through runoff streams, washing out the bedrock and picking up chemicals from fertilizer. 



The proposed solution still uses the channel to work with gravity, but collects the water along the way in processing units.
It acts as the backbone implementation for a long-term healing process, substituting industries and environments alike.

The Masterplan shows a network of water processing plants, vertical farming- and biomass disposal facilities. This healing process slowly transforms the landscape over time.



Water purification and -desalination plants are placed strategically along existing irrigation channels. Here, a cleansing cycle is initiated, providing fresh water for aquacultures. 



The implementation of a new technology acts as the nucleus, allowing novel farming- and regeneration strategies to follow up.

Over time, the organic waste of the hydroponic production is turned into Mycelium structures meant to function as nourishing ground of a biologic repopulation.

The formerly disruptive practice of agriculture is therefore turned into a driver of regeneration, redefining the relation of industrial production and the environment.The mycelium-based building material slowly turns the landscape into refuges for humans and natural agents alike. Agricultural production is no longer seen as mere extraction, but as transformative opposition to climatic disruption.

	Through robotic printing, the infrastructural  intervention is turned into habitats over time. A network of lattice structures is used as rails for the robots, slowly housing in the systems. The emerging structures provide shelter and refuge as well as renourish the soil for small-scale traditional farming.&#38;nbsp;Artificial and biological components enter a new symbiosis, harmonically integrating into the landscape. Contributing to a natural-technical continuum, the lifecycles overlap, letting the framework for the printing robots being overgrown by time and then dissolve within.

Water purification and -desalination plants are placed strategically along existing irrigation channels. Here, a cleansing cycle is initiated, providing fresh water for aquacultures. 



The implementation of a new technology acts as the nucleus, allowing novel farming- and regeneration strategies to follow up.The desalinated water is used in effective vertical farming crop production, in imminent symbiosis with adjacent aquacultures. Instead of disposing the traces of productgion downstream, the leftover organic mass is used as fertilizer for outdoor crop production.

	Ultimately, the project slowly turns the landscape into refuges for humans and non-human species. Agricultural production is no longer seen as mere extraction, but as transformative opposition to climatic disruption.
Through a strategy of circular systems, usage of new materials and  additive manufacturing, the project redefines the interrelations of production and disposal. Extraction is counteracted with regeneration and gives birth to a new environmental morphogenesis.

The site of Heiligenstadt-Spittelau is dominated by
space-consuming private modes of transportation and its passive
storage areas, dissecting it into disconnected islands. Its
characteristics stress the environment by blocking natural corridors
and promoting heat islands due to a lack of greenery. In a future
scenario where autonomous mobility is extensively used and
transportation patterns change, the current day city scape will have
to transform into a new urban environment and enforce a paradigm
shift. 


The project aims to establish a horizontal connection, reclaiming
infrastructural spaces and reinvigorate the area. Nested into the
context, it does not neglect the existing, but rather speculates on
conscious additions to the cityscape. Its design methodology features
the enhanced use of computational and data-driven technologies to
explore behavioural analysis. Layered models of artificial
intelligence, fed with large amounts of contextual data and manual
design inputs, help to identify future zones of development and
intervention on an urban scale. 


In doing so, the project aims to hypothezise new ways of
co-existing within an architectural domain and how a procedural
design process can be derived from a synthesis of human and machine
intelligence as new divergence of design methodologies, resulting in
unfamiliar and ambiguous outcomes.

	Cities are often dominated by a
space-consuming private mode of transport, the car. In a future
scenario of autonomous mobility city scapes will be transformed into
new urban environments. Minimizing the space contribution of traffic
areas, this allows for the reallocation of programme and
redistribution of functions.
Assuming the implementation of a shared
automated transport system, the project explores the potentials to
break with established infrastructural divisors, counteract the
overheating issues of sealed (traffic-) surfaces and reinvigorate an
especially affected area of Vienna. A central consideration is the reallocation of parking space, as the area of unused vehicles makes up substantial space. Intelligent mobility systems obliterate the necessity to store units nearby; if unoccuopied, units may charge or conduct cargo-related operations that are time-independent.&#38;nbsp;

The traffic analysis shows a highly
disconnected transportation system that divides the site. Private and
public transport are completely detached and function seperately. Due
to climate change and its consequences heat islands and decreasing
greenery have become a pressing issue. With the Donau canal as
natural dividor, the parallel railways and the industrial buildings
along them enhance this effect and restrict recreational access. Only
few horizontal connections bridge this vertically alined area.

	Investigating novel material strategies, the proposal investigates LC3 (Limestone Calcinated Clay Cement) as low-emission building material that can be sourced locally.



The Modules can be both printed on site to slowly grow or be assembled in prefabricated units cast in modular formwork. 



As additonal system, a modular CLT structure from regional spruce acts as beneficiary element, being able to allow monomaterialistic crosssections in respective parts.



Both materials have excellent autoregulating climatic properties with wood providing diffusion and the concrete alternative thermal storage.

In addition to the already defined ecologic zones, the crevasses between the layers of the printed LC3 allow for the inhabitation by natural species. Through the curved surface, the microclimate is lowered in the summer by better evapotranspiration.

This can be leveraged to create building-integrated habitats supporting biodiversity. Geologically and biologically inspired textures and forms create heterogenous microtopographies amd -climates fostering plant growth.The project aims to situate itself within the existing context, nesting in rather than overriding. It challenges the rigidity of the conventional building practice, by providing adaptable interventions that change over time, allowing circular strategies and a plurality of use. Aging and Decay are integral parts of the struc-ture, treating buildings as instance that can grow and change over time.

		<description>Digital Tectonicspoetics of augmented space

	The cartography, measurement and depiction of environments is never a true reproduction: tools and algorithms alter the outcome, and most sensing processes can’t be fully objective. 



Digital readings of the world consist of densities, structures and patterns themselves, often unrelated to their physical counterparts. This research aims to reveal and detect hidden qualities, whilst questioning the reliability and necessary resolution of data. 



The deeper digital structures are investigated and resampled, the more they reveal their own tectonics, visible only on molecular level. Algorithmic imprecisions cause glitches and aliasing of fully new character.


In fast progressing times, these machine visions increase in complexity, but also in relevancy: To understand a world that is already heavily reliant on technology only comprehensive to a few, it is crucial to maintain the transparency and integrity of the digital realm.

mesh structures emerging from voxelization of scan data that are not featured in their physical counterparts. with the varying reading density causes “ribbons” in the topology resulting in unexpected structures. Exceeding certain distance thresholds results in the tesselation of smaller islands that become linked by thinner ribbons.

Reproduction
 
a digital asset (”perceptive machine”) gathers data of models through ray projection imitating the functionality of actual devices.&#38;nbsp; Subject of investigation is a digital model of Friedrich Kiesler’s Endless house, described by him as “the sum of possible movements within” (and thus definedthrough intuition rather than rationality).&#38;nbsp;
The digital scanner operates on a predefined path through the space, “scanning” (&#38;gt;through rayprojection and collison culling) its environemtnand gathering attributes throughout the process: The distance to the device, angle of collsion, density(across multiple frames and in single ones through the orientation towards the device), orientation of surface and uv space in relation to device angle are all collected and stored on the emerging point clouds.

The emerging reading samples consist of densities, structures and patterns themselves, unrelated to their physical counterparts. 
The digital structures are investigated and resampled by highlighting and tesselation according to gathered attributes and activation thresholds. 
The emergent structures are not only representations and technological surveys, but reveal an underlying, digital structure, similar to the molecular level of physical objects, that consists of its own patterns and structures.
